SCBI Grassland Bird Ecology Program Alumni

Derek Hahn
Grassland Bird Ecology Intern 2018.

Shane Sater
Grassland Bird Ecology Intern 2018. Shane is a naturalist and freelance author with a deep curiosity about plants, birds, and ecological relationships. He lives on traditional Blackfeet, Kootenai, and Salish territory in Helena, Montana, where he is currently pursuing a B.A. in Environmental Science from Carroll College. Foremost among his many interests are cooking with native plants and helping restore their populations along with friends and family. Shane serves as Habitat Protection chair and newsletter editor for Last Chance Audubon Society. His articles have appeared in Montana Outdoors and Birdwatching Magazine.

Emily Card
Grassland Ecology Intern 2019. Emily received her BS in Zoology from Michigan State University in 2017. She is currently a MS student at Sul Ross State University studying wintering grassland birds in the Chihuahuan Desert and assessing their responses to habitat restoration. After graduate school, Emily aspires to be a wildlife biologist for a state or federal agency. In this role, she hopes to continue collaborating with private landowners and resource managers, as well as providing inclusive education and outreach opportunities for the public. In addition to being a bird nerd, Emily loves to hike, camp, go herping, and go on long road trips to explore new places.

Courtney Check
Grassland Ecology Intern 2019.  Courtney graduated with a double major in Biology and Environmental Science and Policy from the College of William and Mary in 2019. She is looking forward to beginning her MS degree in the Levi lab at Utah State University in 2021, where she will be studying movement ecology in large mammals. Broadly speaking, she is interested in research that examines how and why animals use landscapes, and how this affects their population structure.

Andrew Hallberg
Andrew received his BA in Biology from St. Olaf College in 2018. After a couple of years spent working in various field tech positions, Andrew will be starting his graduate studies at the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2020 to earn a MS in Conservation Biology. His work will be focused on avian ecology in urban environments as a part of Dr. Robert Blair’s lab.
